New Insight: The Burden of an NTD in Europe

A recent systematic review in The Lancet Infectious Diseases significantly highlights the often-unrecognized burden of alveolar echinococcosis, a neglected parasitic infectious disease (NTD), across Europe.

Coordinated by the EURL-PH-HP at the ISS, this multicentre study analyzed 4,207 human cases from 1997-2023. It identified the Alpine and Baltic countries as current epicenters (2021-2023 trends). The findings are crucial for informing One Health surveillance planning for Echinococcus multilocularis in both animals and humans, underscoring the need for greater attention to NTDs within Europe.
