Driven to End Malaria: Now We Can. Now We Must.

On April 25, 2026, the global health community marks World Malaria Day at a pivotal point in the fight against one of the world’s deadliest infectious diseases. This year’s theme, Driven to End Malaria Now We Can Now We Must, underscores both the unprecedented progress achieved and the urgency of sustained action.

Malaria remains a major global health challenge despite decades of intervention. Hundreds of millions of cases are reported annually, with over 600000 deaths each year, the majority occurring in sub Saharan Africa and disproportionately affecting children under five. The disease is preventable and treatable, yet gaps in access, funding, and health system capacity continue to limit impact.

Recent advances have significantly strengthened the malaria response. The scale up of insecticide treated nets, rapid diagnostic testing, and effective antimalarial treatments has saved millions of lives. In addition, the rollout of the first malaria vaccines represents a historic milestone, offering new opportunities to reduce mortality in high burden settings.

The 2026 World Malaria Day communications toolkit developed by the Global Fund emphasizes a clear message. The tools to end malaria exist. What is required now is sustained political commitment, increased investment, and coordinated implementation at scale. Progress is fragile and can reverse quickly without continued support.

Key priorities include expanding access to prevention tools, strengthening community based health services, addressing drug and insecticide resistance, and ensuring equitable delivery of new innovations. Integrated approaches that combine surveillance, treatment, prevention, and health system strengthening remain essential.

World Malaria Day serves not only as a moment of reflection but as a platform for accountability and renewed commitment. Governments, donors, research institutions, and civil society must align efforts to close remaining gaps and accelerate progress toward elimination.

The trajectory is clear. Ending malaria is within reach, but only if momentum is maintained and translated into concrete action at all levels.

Now we can. Now we must.
