A decisive year for global health
Global Health EDCTP3 has published the English version of an article originally featured in El País on why 2027 will be a decisive year for global health, with Spain hosting three of the leading international forums on infectious disease research, prevention and control.
In 2027, three major congresses will take place in quick succession:
13th EDCTP Forum: 5–9 April 2027, Madrid
8th Global Forum on TB Vaccines: 12–14 April 2027, Zaragoza
15th European Congress on Tropical Medicine and International Health (ECTMIH 2027): 25–28 October 2027, Barcelona
ECTMIH 2027, held under the theme "Refocusing on Global Health", is organised by the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) in collaboration with FESTMIH and the Spanish Society of Tropical Medicine and International Health (SEMTSI). It will focus on Europe's role in the emerging global health architecture, cross-border collaboration on infectious diseases, and the One Health approach.
Marco Albonico, President of FESTMIH, is quoted in the article, stressing that the right to health is a universal right and that Europe must remember how the greatest burden of preventable infection continues to fall on the world's most vulnerable populations.
The article comes at a time of unprecedented cuts to global health funding, and makes the case for Europe to take on a more active, leading role including through the EU's 2028–2034 budget and the renewal of programmes such as Global Health EDCTP3.
